Witnesses: Man hit while working, dies after crash
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Kan. – A pedestrian dies after a crash in Montgomery County, but authorities are not releasing details at this time about the possible driver.
The County Sheriff’s Office says the incident happened this morning around 6:53 am. Deputies, fire and EMS personnel responded to County Road 3706 CR 4475 (West Oak Street). They heard about a vehicle versus pedestrian accident.
Once they got there, they found an unresponsive man in the ditch. Fire and EMS started treating his injuries. EMS took him to Labette ER in Independence, Kansas. According to the Sheriff’s Office, they later learned the man had died due to his injuries. Authorities identified him as 60-year-old Marty Raney of Independence.
“Witnesses told deputies, that Raney was struck by a pickup truck while he was performing his job duties. The investigation is still ongoing, and no further details will be released at this time,” states the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. “Sheriff Ron Wade asks the public to respect the privacy of Raney’s family during this time of loss. Wade also asks the public to be mindful of commenting things they hear that may not be true of what happened. Authorities have not said if a vehicle stopped after the crash or if they are looking for a suspect vehicle.
