Williams shines for Pitt State in indoor track season

Christine Williams has been named MIAA Track Athlete of the Week for the second straight week.

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Pitt State senior sprinter Christine Williams is having a big time indoor season for the Gorillas.

Last weekend Williams broke her own school record in the 200 meter dash for the third time this indoor season – doing it at home in the team’s 7th annual Gorilla Indoor Classic.

“It feels pretty good. Breaking records back-to-back like that shows that I’m constantly improving,” Williams says.

Williams posted a time of 24.07 seconds to win the 200 meter race last weekend, which is the #1 time in all of Division II this indoor season.

“It’s been a goal of mine for so many years to have that #1 spot,” Williams says, “To have it right now is great, but it’s not officially mine until I can get a trophy that says first place.”

Williams was named the MIAA Track Athlete of the Week for the second straight week on Tuesday. In addition to breaking her own school record in the 200 meter race, she also posted a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the 60 meter race (7.67) and helped her team do the same in the 4X400M relay (3:46.73).

“I’ve been through so much, so to get that recognition means a lot,” Williams says.

“She’s really developed her confidence in workouts. Our training has changed to kind of help her out with that,” says Pitt State head coach Kyle Rutledge.

“Those workouts are killing me at practice,” Williams says with a laugh, “but at the end of the day it helps me PR and break records. They might kill me, but at the end of the day, I’m winning.”

“She’s become a leader on the team. Her overall confidence in her own ability is growing. She believes in herself and…I think all that comes together and you can see her confidence on the track.”
