Webb City rides momentum into state quarterfinal against Lebanon
Webb City hosts Lebanon in the state quarterfinals at 7 pm on Friday
WEBB CITY, Mo. – The Webb City Cardinals are locked in for another week of postseason football.
“It feels great. Every team wants to be in our position right now,” says senior running back Cade Wilson. “Coming off of last weeks win, we want to do better than we did last week, so we’ve been putting in work out here.”
Webb City took down undefeated Carthage last Friday to earn their spot in the state quarterfinals.
“I think it was a great learning opportunity for our team. We’ve really grown this year,” says Webb City head coach John Roderique. “We learned to never give up, never give in. We were down 14-0 against Carthage and had two turnovers. We could’ve packed our bags and called it a year, but our kids kept battling.”
It was a big win and it deserved celebration, but now the Cardinals have only one thing on their minds.
“We took Saturday and Sunday off. We didn’t come in. I told them to just enjoy the win,” Roderique says. “But I told them that on Monday morning, we would be doing a scouting report. I said once we get to that point we’re not looking back, we’re looking forward. This whole week that’s all we’ve thought about is getting ready for Lebanon.”
“We had fun, we loved it, it was a great experience, but we have to put it past us,” Wilson says. “We’re onto bigger things and we need to work hard now so we can keep moving on.”
Webb city will host Lebanon on Friday. The Yellowjackets are 10-1.
“They do a really great job of controlling the football and are really patient on offense,” Roderique says. “We have to be able to maximize our opportunities, we can’t make mistakes and we have to get ourselves off the field on defense.”
The Cardinals are looking forward to getting to play in front of their home crowd.
“It’s a great atmosphere when you’re walking down to the field and you see everyone in the stands, cheering,” says Wilson. “It just feels good.”
Webb City’s game against Lebanon kicks off Friday at 7 pm in Webb City.
