We speak with Ottawa County Sheriff about the escaped inmates

MIAMI, Okla. – On October 4th at approximately 2:45 pm four inmates from the Ottawa county jail escaped on foot.

One inmate, Rusty Reece, was caught shortly after. Daniel Zajicek, Tyler Tavis, Buck Martindale remained on foot.

October 5th inmate Martindale was caught and rewards were offered for any information leading to the last two arrests.

On October 7th the last two inmates Tavis and Zajicek were caught.

Sheriff David Dean said contractors were working in one of the pod’s rec yards and as contractors went in and out, the jailer did not close the door behind him.

The sheriff says this wasn’t a jail issue but an issue with the jailer leaving the door open as the inmates escaped.

Dean said it’s a staffing issue but they can’t afford to hire more jailers.
