Two separate water main breaks in the city Thursday (the 7th) left two out of four water towers empty.

Now.. schools are out, and many residents and businesses are being told to not use water unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Randy Collins is the owner and head chef at Cafe Angelica in Neosho.. and to say he had an interesting morning may be an understatement.

Randy Collins:”Where do I start..”

His business.. along with much of the City of Neosho.. is under a boil advisory and mandatory water conservation notice.

Collins:”We had already brewed iced tea for the day so we dumped it, and re brewed. I boiled water and made iced tea and boiled water to make our raspberry lemonade.”

Thursday morning, public works discovered a water main break close to Morse park.

Rachel Holcomb, Neosho Assistant City Manager:”So that was able to be fixed and they closed that up, and then after that, they found another one over by Wheeler street. Aand it did take them a little bit of time to find that. These lines are from the 1940’s and they do need to be replaced, it just takes a lot of money to do that.”

That second break drained two of the city’s four water towers.. leaving many people in town with either low pressure, or no water at all — and wasn’t found until the next morning.

Towers are now being re filled — but, the pressure got so low many people in town are under a boil advisory.. and are being told to not use water unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Holcomb:”If you’re using water, than it’s taking water away from going into the towers, and we need to fill up that before we can make sure that everyone has adequate supply and pressure.”

The Newton County Health Department is also going to restaurants and other businesses that sell food — like cafe angelica — recommending either shutting down temporarily.. or doing things like using bottled water and soda, buying ice instead of making it, and not using tap water in food.

Collins:”And that’s what you have to do. Especially when your dealing with the public.. that’s first and foremost.”

Oofficials will be testing the water today (Friday the 8th).. and anticipate getting results back around two pm on Saturday.

After that, the boil advisory should be lifted.

The city has released a map of what areas are actually under that advisory.

The city of Neosho has also released a lot of information on their Facebook page, which can be found here.
