Mt. Vernon police were called twice to the scene last night, first for a burglary, then ultimately a homicide.

32-year-old Kevin Stafford was found dead when police arrived to a home on the five hundred block of East Kirby Street. According to a probable cause statement Stafford was found lying on the couch with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his chest and hand. The statement reveals the suspect, 50-year-old Robert Waite, said he shot Stafford with a handgun kept in his car. Initially the victim called authorities saying that the suspect’s daughter had items stolen from him. Police say the pair were in a relationship about a year ago.

“This is the first time in seven years that we’ve had a homicide within Mt. Vernon. For an individual to lose his life over the value of a BBQ grill and a table is horrible,” says Mt. Vernon Police Chief David Hubert.

Waite was arrested yesterday evening in Carthage and has now been transferred to Lawrence County Jail. He has been charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action, with a bond set at $500,000.
