Update on Jan. 7 fatal crash at 20th and Rangeline

JOPLIN, Mo. – Authorities release more details after a Jasper man loses his life in a fatal crash in Joplin, Missouri.

Police say before the crash, he was involved in a custody dispute at the Joplin Public Library. Authorities are still investigating the crash.

January 7th child custody dispute

On January 7, 2022, at 4:49 pm, Joplin Police officers responded to a call of a disturbance at the Joplin Public Library (1901 E. 20th Street). Police got to the library and determined the dispute was over child custody issues.

Police determined that the situation didn’t warrant any arrest or criminal charges. The involved parties separated.

Fatal Crash after dispute

One adult male involved in the disturbance at the Library left the scene going east on 20th Street.

A short time later, the Joplin Police Department took a 911 call about a single-vehicle crash at 20th and Rangeline. A vehicle reportedly hit a pole and caught fire.

Officers got to the crash scene along with Joplin Fire Department and METS Ambulance personnel.  They confirmed the driver was the adult male involved in the previous disturbance at the Joplin Public Library.

The man, identified as 31-year-old David R. Pulsipher of Jasper, Missouri, died at the scene.

The Joplin Police Department Major Crash Team investigated. According to their preliminary report, they believe the vehicle was going east on 20th Street. It approached Rangeline Road and hit a right turn island, then hit a stoplight support barrier and caught fire.

They are still investigating.
