Two killed in head-on wreck west of Carthage

Two passengers suffered serious injuries

JASPER COUNTY, Mo. – Two women are killed in a wreck southwest of Carthage, Mo. just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

Police say 24-year-old Baylee Shorter of Carthage was heading east on Fir Road when her vehicle crossed the center line, striking an oncoming car head-on. The driver of that car, 17-year-old Jessida Batie of Joplin was pronounced dead at the scene. Shorter was transported to Mercy Hospital where she died later that night. Neither Shorter nor Batie were wearing their seat belt.

The passengers of both vehicles, a 12-year-old girl and 17-year-old Makayla Suter, suffered serious injuries.
