Collision closed K-7 Highway near Bethlehem Road, expect delays as investigation continues

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — About 6 a.m. Friday reports of a BNSF train approaching the Columbus, Kan. rail yard has collided with a passenger car.

Sheriff David Groves of Cherokee County states in a media release, “Deputies and other emergency personnel are on scene of a non-injury crash involving a train north of Columbus on Kansas Highway 7 near Bethlehem Road.”

The train was traveling southbound, traveling much slower than normal, as it was approaching Columbus, Kan.

This train is large, a little over 10,000 feet in length.

The investigation continues however preliminary information says the car was traveling southbound. The car drove off the roadway and got stuck on the tracks, the driver exited the car before the train struck the car.

The roadway was reopened to all traffic just before before 8 a.m.

We will update with more information as it becomes available.

KDOT officials and others are traveling to the crossing to conduct an investigation. There could be short delays at the crossing today.
