UPDATE: John Gregory took a plea deal on June 13, 2019. He plead guilty to stealing, class D felony

He has been sentenced to five years supervised probation after a sentence of four years in the Department of Corrections was suspended.

Police arrest a suspect 13 minutes after the vehicle theft.

The crime happened on October 31st, 2018. Joplin Police officers were called around 7:24 a.m. to the 2800 block of South Wisconsin for a vehicle theft that had just happened. Authorities say the victim was warming up her minivan, preparing to load up her kids, and saw a male get into her vehicle and drive off.

Officers searched the area for the stolen vehicle. One officer drove to a location near 28 th and Minnesota where a stolen vehicle had been parked and recovered a week before. The officer got to the location and at 7:55 a.m. saw the stolen 2015 Chrysler Town and Country Minivan. It was backed into a driveway at 2724 South Minnesota and the suspect was removing items from the vehicle, such as a car seat, according to police.

The officer went up to the suspect, John E. Gregory III, and arrested him. Police returned the minivan to the owner.

The Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office charged Gregory III with Stealing a Motor Vehicle with a $4,000 bond.

Police remind residents that this time of year they see a spike in vehicle thefts in the mornings from people starting their cars and leaving them unattended.
