Suspect arrested in alleged hostage situation in Parsons
Woman says her hair was burned with a torch
PARSONS, Kan. — A 31-year-old man is arrested after a victim says she was held against her will in Parsons, Kansas.
Around 4:16 this morning, Police Officers were sent to Mendota Creek Apartments for a report of a possible hostage situation. Authorities were told a woman was being held at gun point.
Officer Ryan Shirk and Corporal Cheryl Siu got there and went to the reported apartment. Several individuals exited.
According to the Police Department, when ordered to show officers their hands, one man ran into a nearby tree line.
Officer Shirk ran after him and commanded him to come out. The suspect came out and was apprehended.
Authorities identified the man as a 31-year-old Chanute resident. They arrested him in connection to the reported crime.
Investigators say he dropped a black semi-automatic pistol in the tree line when he was arrested.
The victim told police that while being held against her will, her hair was burned with a propane torch. Police say they found a torch at the apartment.
Authorities got consent to search a vehicle that the 31-year-old was suspected to have been in. They found a stolen Smith and Wesson semi-automatic gun and suspected cocaine. Police say the gun was stolen out of Wichita.
The Parsons Police Department is requesting charges against the suspect of Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Robbery, Criminal Damage to Property, Possession of Controlled Substance, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks said, “active situations are dynamic and can easily spin out of control. Everyone involved in this situation is fortunate that there were no injuries.” Spinks continued, “this is a family-oriented apartment complex, and we continue to seek information on criminal activity in this neighborhood.”
