Suspect arrested for theft, arson at S. Sergeant Ave. home
JOPLIN, Mo. – Authorities say a Joplin man broke into a home, stole items and then lit it on fire.
On November 21, 2021, Joplin Police officers and firefighters responded to 1101 S. Sergeant Avenue for a reported structure fire.
When they got there, the unoccupied home was fully engulfed in flames.
According to the Joplin Police Department, a witness described a suspect in the area that made suspicious statements regarding the fire. Authorities found the suspect nearby and arrested him on active warrants unrelated to the fire.
Police identified the suspect as Kerry W. Long, 33, of Joplin, Missouri.
After his arrest, a Joplin detective developed evidence that Long entered the home, stole property and lit it on fire while inside.
Authorities are asking the Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to file charges of 2nd-degree burglary and 2nd-degree arson.
