The “Out of the Darkness” walk took place at Mercy Park in Joplin.

The event was hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The group created a pinwheel garden as a memorial to those lost to suicide.

Funds allow the foundation to invest in research, educational programs and support survivors of suicide loss.

Beth Hendren, a foundation board member, says that seeing this turnout is heartening.

“It means the world to me. It means that we’re doing our job and we’re trying to stop the stigma, and we’re raising awareness and we’re raising funds and education about suicide,” said Hendren with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The event raised more than $5,000 for suicide prevention research and programs.
