Sheet metal hangs from trees and debris line streets in Afton, Oklahoma after a severe thunderstorm tears through homes south of town.

Crews work to restore power and running water to the Wheatley’s ranch which appears to have experienced the brunt of the hit.

“Probably had been home about twenty minutes and we got the text alerts, you know, on our phones and it was coming towards us and we said it’s time,” says homeowner Tracy Wheatley.

Wheatley and her friends and family, a total of seven, scrambled to take shelter along with their three dogs in the house’s tiny closet.

“It was tight. it was very close,” she says.

This is what’s left of the Wheatley’s trailer which was flown about fifty yards away from their ranch behind me, but what matters most was left untouched.

“We just told each other we gotta pray, we gotta pray. You know. And it’s pretty obvious god kept his guardian angels around us because our house is the only thing not touched, you know.”

The Wheatley’s two barns and repair shop suffered major damage, roofs and walls torn off their foundation.

“We were here and everything was fine and normal and then when we come outside and it was like holy cow, it was so real like. Dillon and I were right here, who knows what would’ve happened if would’ve waited any longer to get inside the house, you never know what might of happened,” says family friend Faleesha Sherrod.

Wheatley says after this ordeal an investment in safety is in the family’s near future.

“It makes me want to buy a storm shelter, really bad.”

The National Weather Service is still continuing its investigation of the Afton area and has yet to confirm whether a tornado touched down in the region last night.
