Lewis Standlee (Stan) Steenrod was-80 years of age at the time of his passing. He passed away after a quick decline in his health on – July 6th, 2022 in Shoreline Washington.
Born in Joplin, Missouri in 1941 to Lewis and Opal Steenrod. He graduated from Joplin High School where in additional to playing trumpet in the ROTC Marching Band, he was a stage hand and enjoyed hoisting the sets and setting the lights at the various school productions. While in high school, his first job was at Barnett’s Radio and TV repair. He attended Joplin Junior College (JJC) for his freshman and sophomore years of college, finishing his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Missouri, Columbia Campus. He courted and married Sharon Lea Miller, also of Joplin, on June 8, 1963.
Stan started his government work with the Air Force in the Pentagon in Oct 1967. After four year in Washington DC, Stan accepted a NATO posting in The Hague, Netherlands. Three years in Holland and back to the DC area, to the Army’s Concepts Analysis Agency (CAA), now Center for Army Analysis. After three years, Stan spent a year in training at the Army War College in Carlisle PA. From there, Stan accepted an Army job in Heidelberg Germany. Five years in Germany then back to Washington DC for an Army job in the Pentagon. Stan remained with the Army until his retirement in May 2012 – a 44 year career with the government. Stan had been promoted to Senior Executive Service in 2002 and was in the resourcing business, helping build the Army’s budget for equipment purchases – tanks, helicopters, trucks, etc.
Stan is survived by his wife, Sharon; his sister Lewann Sowersby of Joplin; his daughters: Kelly, Nicole, Ann and son, Mark; Nicole’s husband Ryan, Ann’s husband Toby; and 4 grandsons: Ethan Pilla, Jamie Ferguson and Wyatt and Lucas Mock.
