PITTSBURG, Kan. - RELEASE FROM PITTSBURG STATE ATHLETICS:

The Pittsburg State University football team exploded for 31 first quarter points en route to a 65-6 season ending victory over Missouri Southern State University Saturday (Nov. 16) at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium.

The Gorillas halted a disappointing five-game losing streak with the victory against the Lions to end the season with a 6-5 overall record. MSSU completed its year at 2-9.

Lorenzo West caught seven passes for a career high 176 yards and four touchdowns in his final collegiate game. West tied the Pitt State single game receiving touchdowns mark in the contest. He hauled in touchdown catches of 71 and 30 yards in the Gorillas' first quarter scoring outburst as well as scores of 16 yards in the third quarter and 29 yards in the final period.

Mak Sexton, starting in place of an injured Brandon Mlekus, completed six of 12 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns before exiting the game at halftime. Matt Harman played the final two quarters under center for the Gorillas, completing 10 of 14 passes for 132 yards and two scores.

The Gorillas compiled 523 yards of total offense in the contest – 242 yards on the ground and 286 yards through the air.

The Pitt State defense limited MSSU to negative 25 yards rushing in the contest and 246 total yards. The Gorillas intercepted five passes of MSSU quarterbacks.

KiAnte Hardin returned a punt 54 yards to the MSSU 1 yard line to set up Pitt State's first score. Wilbur Cooper scored on the next play to give the Gorillas a 7-0 lead with 13:54 remaining in the opening period. 

On MSSU's next offensive play, Alex Derryberry intercepted a Jacob Park pass and returned it to the MSSU 1. Three plays later, Tyler Adkins plowed into the end zone from three yards out for a 14-0 Pitt State lead at the 12:19 mark of the first quarter.

Jared Vincent booted three field goals in the contest. He connected from 31, 48 and 38 yards in the game.

Jackson Krull caught a three-yard TD pass from Sexton late in the second quarter and DeMarcus Edwards scored Pitt State's final touchdown on a 15 yard run with 10:39 to play in the game.

Derryberry and Chase Johnston each made a team-leading five tackles for Pitt State. Johnston and Elijah Robinson recorded solo sacks, while Simanu'a Thomas and Zeke Wall combined for a third quarterback sack. Derryberry, Morgan Selemaea, Kaden Roy, Adam Smith and Tyrece Parker all registered interceptions. Hardin made three tackles and three pass break ups.
