MSSU women's soccer to face #24 UCO

The Lions are 2-8 this season

JOPLIN, Mo. - RELEASE FROM MISSOURI SOUTHERN ATHLETICS:

The Missouri Southern women's soccer squad prepares for a showdown against No. 24 Central Oklahoma tomorrow at 6:00 pm and a meeting with new MIAA member Newman University on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
 
The Lions (2-8-0, 1-2-0 MIAA) are coming off a 2-1 loss to Northeastern State where freshman Ashton Manwill recorded her third goal of the season to tie the match up at 1-1. She matches Bailey Belcher for most goals on the squad with three. Thus far, MSSU's goalkeepers lead the MIAA in saves with 72 through the first ten matches of the season.

Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association … won both the MIAA regular-season and tournament championships (22-2-0 overall /10-1-0 MIAA)  to snap the Central Missouri Jennies streak of eight consecutive regular-season titles and four tournament titles by defeating them 6-1 in the finals … picked to win with seven first-place votes in the conference preseason poll … retained six All-MIAA selections from last season in senior forward Asha Haile (1st), senior defender Kelsey Gordon (1st), junior midfielders Kelsie Eason (1st) and Camille Greer, and sophomore goalkeeper Kelsi Gibson (1st) and sophomore defender Taryn Kedzior (1st) … Gordon (2nd) and Eason (3rd) were also named D2CCA All-Americans … two other starters join them with ten or more starts during the 2018 season … their visit to Joplin will mark the Bronchos second road test of the season with the first coming out a 2-1 victory over Northeastern State … Head coach Mike Cook enters his 22nd season at the helm of the Bronchos after coming to Edmond to kick start the program in 1998 and leading the team to 12 NCAA tournament appearances since 2000 … holds a 397-136-31 record throughout the Division II landscape, ranking as one of the top coaches in wins and winning percentage.
 
Newman University (5-2-3, 1-1-1 MIAA)
Series: Tied at 1-1-1
Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association … finished third last season as part of the Heartland Conference (12-4-3 / 8-3-3 MIAA) … picked eighth in the conference preseason poll after officially joining the MIAA back in July … retain two All-Heartland selections from last season in senior midfielder Vanessa Ortiz Newman (1st) and junior defender Kyra Butler (1st) … six other starters join them with ten or more starts during the 2018 season … began its first season in the MIAA with a 4-0-2 record, included forcing UCO to a scoreless tie before falling to Northeastern State and Fort Hays State each by one goal … allowed only four goals thus far through ten matches for first in the MIAA; three coming from NSU … head coach Aaron Avila enters his fourth season at the helm of the Jets … currently holds a 30-16-10 overall record since taking over the program in 2016 where he led the team to its first winning season (7-6-5) since 2010 … he's yet to have a losing season in his coaching career at all levels of competition.
