Southeast leans on experience heading into fall schedule

Coach Cheney lists 9 starters back on each side of the ball.

CHEROKEE, Kan. – The Southeast Lancers are in the middle of their second week of fall practice – and they’re just 10 days away from their season opener.

Southeast took a bit of a step back last season, finishing with a 3-4 overall record after going 7-3 in 2019. The Lancers did, however, make the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

Head coach Nick Cheney lists 9 starters back on each side of the ball this season, including All-TRL selections Cade Burdette, Cullen Mutz and Brandon Favuzzi. That experience has Southeast feeling ahead of the curve to begin fall practice.

“We only got about 5 or 6 plays on offense so far,” Cheney says with a laugh, “But yeah, we’re ahead of the curve. Any time you have guys who have some games under their belt, it will help you out for the next year.”

“I think our team is strong this season,” Mutz says, “We have a group of seniors who have been together since mini Lancer football. We have a couple young guys who have a lot of potential this year.”

On top of having experience this season – numbers are good for the Southeast football program.

“We’ve got 34 kids out,” Cheney adds, “For a 2A school, we’re pretty happy with that. They’re working hard. They went through the weight program this summer and they’re practicing and giving good effort.”

Southeast opens the season on September 3rd, with a home game against Uniontown.
