“Soles4Souls” shoe drive at MSSU
Some Missouri Southern students want to make an impression overseas by collecting gently used or new shoes for people in Haiti. The students are partnering with a national organization called Soles4Souls.
Collection boxes will be at different locations throughout the MSSU campus. One student organizer says the Joplin tornado taught her a lot about helping people in need.
“You see that’s there’s something so devastating, like an earthquake or a tornado, and years after, there’s still devastation. People still in need. And so, it really spoke to me because in Haiti, all of the earthquake victims, they’re still dealing with that,” says Sydney Marsellis.
People can also help get the shoes to Haiti.
“We are trying to send the shoes all the way to Nashville, because that’s where their home office is. And so whenever we need to send those, we obviously need money in order to ship. So, we are accepting monetary donations,” says Marsellis.
This is the second year MSSU students have collected shoes for Soles4Souls.
“We actually had a church last year donate several. They came to us in trash bags. So, that was really great. The community really pulled together,” says Marsellis.
Donation boxes are located in Hearnes Hall, Webster Hall, Billingsly Student Center, Plaster Hall, and Spiva Library. The shoe collection goes through April 1.
The local shoe drive is being organized by MSSU’s Public Relations Student Society.
