Shoal Creek and Grand Falls water search continues in Joplin, Mo. for missing man

The area of Grand Falls is closed to the public. It is part of the city of Joplin. The roadway is closed to traffic along Grand Falls Plaza Rd/Riverside Drive.

JOPLIN, Mo. — An adult male is missing along Shoal Creek after he was reported to have gone over the Grand Falls just before 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Water Rescue teams searched until well after sunset last evening when it was deemed too dangerous to continue and the search resumed this morning.

This morning Missouri State Highway Patrol Tpr Sam Carpenter tells us State Water Patrol are working surface search and using depth sonar.  He updates us late in the day Wednesday saying this is now a recovery operation. 

Joplin Fire Deputy Chief Andy Nimmo says Joplin Water Rescue, Mo Dept of Conservation officers and Redings Mill Water Rescue are assisting State Water Patrol. 

The area of Grand Falls is closed to the public. It is part of the city of Joplin. The roadway is closed to traffic along Grand Falls Plaza Rd/Riverside Drive until further notice Joplin Police tell us.

The adult male went over the falls in a recreational floatation item. He did not resurface.

At approximately 4:50 p.m. Joplin 911 received reports of a male subject riding a raft near Joplin’s Grand Falls did not resurface after he went over the falls. Joplin Fire and Redings Mill Fire swift water rescue teams responded to the location and began searching for the missing person. Additional rescue personnel were sent downstream to begin a wider area search. Searchers continued their efforts until approximately 9 p.m. when the search was called off due to unsafe conditions in the dark. The search will resume at 8 a.m. on Wednesday under the direction of the Missouri State Highway Patrol Water Patrol Division.
