Seneca prepares for Big 8 showdown with Lamar

Seneca and Lamar are each 3-0 heading into Friday night's game.

SENECA, Mo. – The Seneca Indians will play one of their biggest games of the regular season on Friday night, welcoming in the Lamar Tigers in a Big 8 showdown between a pair of undefeated teams.

Seneca (3-0) is ranked #5 in the Missouri class 2 state rankings, while Lamar (3-0) is the #1 team in the class 2 poll.

“We got a really good team coming in on Friday. They’re the number one team in and the state with a great tradition with what they’ve been able to do the last few years,” says Seneca head coach Cody Hilburn on Lamar, “They’re as advertised on film, so we’ll have our hands full on Friday night. They’re super athletic at every position. They can all run. They’re physical and they got some guys who can make you miss in space.”

It’s a big opportunity for the Indians – in front of what will likely be a packed stadium in Seneca.

“It’s a great atmosphere here every Friday night,” Hilburn says, “When you combine bringing the number one team in the state down and us being 3-0, it’s going to be pretty cool.”

“It’s awesome. I think every Friday they come out and support us no matter what,” says senior LB Lincoln Renfro, “I think having a community is probably one of the greatest things about high school football, especially when you have a community like Seneca. I think this week will probably be one of the biggest games that a lot of people have been to in the last couple years. I’m looking forward to seeing how many people turn out and giving them a show.”

“It would mean a lot for our program and our community,” Renfro says of the potential of knocking off Lamar, “One thing we want to focus on is just getting better week by week. It’s not like it’s the state playoffs just yet or the district playoffs just yet. It’s week four. We’re just on a gradual slope to keep getting better and better.”
