With three months till the opening, the new Mercy Hospital is coming together.

Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) made a stop in Joplin to tour the state of the art facility.

“How do you build a hospital to meet people’s needs in the best possible way and it looks like this is gonna be a facility that can and will do that,” says Blunt.

Mercy designed the new hospital to include as many direct access points as possible. When patients first check in at the ER, if they need surgery, doctors can wheel them right down the hall to the OR.”

“Traditionally hospitals just weren’t in the same design. So this gave us an opportunity really to look at the way the future of healthcare should be and build things co-located,” says Mercy Marketing & Communications Director Julie Beatty.

Inside the new operating rooms, doctors will be able to use green ceiling lights to help better see their work.

Blunt also toured the new cancer center and linear accelerator for radiation treatments

“Unfortunately ours was demolished in the tornado, so now we’re able to once again after three years of not being able to provide that we’re once again going to have that in our state of the art new cancer center, says Beatty.

The new cancer center keeps comfort in mind with a heated fireplace and space for a fish tank.

Blunt says the new hospital keeps Joplin moving toward a better tomorrow.

“It was not Joplin just wanting to be what Joplin had been, but Joplin wanting to be more than Joplin had been, more than just restoring who we were but let’s be better than we were.”
