Schrader changes plea in deadly DWI case in Joplin


JASPER COUNTY, Mo. – James Schrader changes his plea to guilty for a DWI crash that resulted in the death of a Webb City resident.

The crash happened on September 16, 2017, at Lone Elm Road and Murphy Boulevard in Joplin.

Police say Schrader was driving a pickup that hit a car head-on. Four people were in the car. One of them, Nicole Sawyer, 27, died at the hospital the next day.

Prosecutors charged him with DWI-Death of Another and two counts of DWI-Serious Physical Injury.

Schrader was scheduled to go to trial in May, but instead changed his plea to guilty on Monday, Feb. 24, 2020.

As part of his plea, his sentencing will be capped at 15 years. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 4.DWI Resulting in Death case set for jury trial
