Sara Belle (Critton) Dieterle, 84, passed away on Dec. 3, 2021 at Medicalodges in Frontenac. She was born July 29, 1937 to Mamie (Frakes) and Harvey Critton. Sara grew up in rural Girard and attended Myers grade school and Girard High School, where she graduated in 1954.
She moved to Wichita and worked for the Wichita Council of Churches for several years before returning to Girard. She married Ron Dieterle. They later divorced but remained friends until his death in 1996.
She worked at Prudential Insurance for 20 years before becoming a stay at home mom in 1980 when her daughter Julie was born. After several years, she began babysitting neighborhood kids and in the early 1990s officially opened her in-home daycare dubbed “Sara’s Country Air Daycare.” For two decades she woke each morning early and welcomed children of all ages into her home. Almost every day, she and the kids made her famous “Mama Sara” chocolate chip cookies. She considered her daycare kids and their parents as family. While she adored all of the babies in her care, her greatest joy was her granddaughter Avery that she was able to watch daily until she entered pre-school.
Sara loved Jesus, the color pink, rose-scented candles, Diet Coke, catching up with friends and family over long phone conversations, thrift-store shopping, Lifetime movies, trips with the daycare kids to the little water bridge, adventures with her best friend Myrna, and spending time with her family.
Over the last 10 years, she endured many health trials. From broken bones and cardiac issues to struggles with depression and anxiety, she remained strong and seemed to win over those who helped care for her with her gentle spirit and quick wit.
Survivors include daughter Julie, son-in-law Joe Del, and the light of her life, her granddaughter Avery. She is also survived by two step-sons Michael and Denny and their families, Joe Del’s family that she considered her own, several nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends and close neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Wilma Wondra, Martha Jones and Joann Calhoun.
Graveside services for Sara B. Dieterle will be held at Myers Cemetery on Tuesday, Dec. 7th at 1pm. With Pastor Randy Beeman officiating. Friends may call after 2pm on Monday, Dec. 6th at the Smith Carson Wall funeral home in Girard.
