Sammie Ann McCarrell Turner, age 89, of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, passed away on Saturday evening, July 2, 2022, in her home surrounded by family. She was born January 4, 1933, in the Elm Branch Community, Lawrence County, Missouri, to Samuel Allen and Lora May (Norman) McCarrell.

Sammie was a 1950 graduate of Aurora High School, in Aurora, Missouri. She earned her Registered Nurse certification in 1953 from St. John’s School of Nursing in Springfield, Missouri.

On May 16, 1952, she married Jack Edward Turner, in her home in Aurora, Missouri. They celebrated their 69th anniversary in 2021.

Sammie’s passion was helping others through nursing, Christian ministry and supporting her husband, Jack. Following her husband to Fort Gordon Military Base in Augusta, Georgia, she used her nursing skills in the hospital while Jack was in the service. After the Korean War, they moved back to the family dairy farm in Ozark Riverdale Community, Missouri. Continuing her career, Sammie worked for the St. John’s Women’s Clinic in Springfield, Missouri. In 1959, Jack and Sammie became the owners/operations of the Ben Franklin Store in Mt. Vernon, Missouri where they built the business for 34 years.

After her retirement, Sammie enjoyed filling in for the Mt. Vernon school district nurse and as a church camp nurse. She was active in Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

She was a Proverbs 31 woman, living her life with grace and demonstrating Jesus’ love to everyone she met. Church was important to her from her roots at Elm Branch Church in Aurora through her role as an elder’s wife at Cornerstone Word Church in Springfield. She was a member of the Life Bridge Assembly of God in Mt. Vernon. Her home was always open to visiting missionaries.

Sammie is survived by her three daughters, Dianne (Ed) Tanquary of Leawood, Kansas, Julianne Turner of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, and Susanne (Kendall) Johnson of Tulsa, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Dianne’s daughter – Haley (Domenic) Jones, Julianne’s daughters – Natalie (Nolan) Sunderman and Megan Short, Susanne’s children – Taylor (Nathan) Sheppard and Nick Johnson; five great-grandchildren, Connor Sunderman, Evette and Lily Jones, Lottie and Sophie Sheppard; one sister, Reatha (Randy) Todd; one sister-in-law, Mary Alice (David) Olinger and several nieces and nephews.

Sammie was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her parents, Samuel and Lora (Norman) McCarrell and two brothers-in-law, John (Ella) Turner and Glenn (Frances) Turner.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 7, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. The service will be held Friday, July 8, at 11:00 a.m. at the Elm Branch Christian Church in Aurora, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to Elm Branch Christian Church, in care of the funeral home.
