Salvation Army collecting toys, cash, for ‘Christmas Toy Drive’ for Crawford County children

Registration for Christmas distribution still open

Patrick Stevens knows what it’s like to go without…for his family, Christmas was especially tough.

“When I was growing up it was just me, my mom, and my little brother in section 8 housing. We didn’t have anything, we got a couple toys maybe and I don’t want other people to feel like that.”

The Salvation Army does an annual Christmas distribution for families in need, to help families put presents under the tree. For the first time, the organization is pairing with Walmart for a National Christmas toy drive event, making the holidays easier for parents.

“It just really is a special day before we start ringing bells, before angel trees come out, to just emphasis don’t forget to buy a toy for Christmas for children in need” said Organizer, Frances Mitchelson.

Stevens appreciates the partnership, knowing it’s helping kids with similar backgrounds to his.

“It’s very vital because some families cannot support their children and the Salvation Army, they step in and try to help families in need and I really like that.”

His experience made him want to help others. He didn’t have to think twice about donating.

“I know what it’s like for that, I know what it’s like for when I was young and not having any toys like that, so I just want to, you know, pay back for if I want something, I might as well help somebody else have it.”

The Christmas distribution will help kids and families in Crawford County. Each family that registers will receive a food box, toiletries and toys for kids. Which in turn will help make Christmas merrier for those who might otherwise go without.

“That family could be a family with lots of children, a couple, a single, because we want everyone to have a better Christmas than what we may be able to provide for themselves” added Mitchelson.
