Ruth Ann Carter

Ruth Ann Carter, 88, passed peacefully through heaven’s gates on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, at her home in Loma Linda/Joplin, MO.

Ruth was born June 23, 1931, in Monett, Missouri, daughter of the late Roscoe Jackson and Anna Redington Jackson. She married her teenage sweetheart and best friend, Jimmy Lewis Carter, on August 20, 1950. Jim preceded her in death on June 14, 2017, after 66 years of marriage.

Ruth graduated from Monett High School in 1949. While raising her family in 1969, she earned her bachelor’s degree and in 1981, earned her master’s degree in Education. Ruth taught 5th grade for over 25 years with the Joplin School District at Washington and Royal Heights Elementary Schools. An active member of Byers Avenue United Methodist Church for over fifty years, she cherished her Sunday School members, thinking of them as a second family. She enjoyed golfing and was an avid bridge player throughout her lifetime. Ruth made a great first mate. She and Jim sailed all over the world and were founding members of the Grand Lake Sailing Club. They also delighted in traveling throughout the United States and Canada in their motorhomes. In later years, they wintered in Mission, Texas, where they made close friends with other “snow-birds” from all over the country. Ruth will be missed for being a devoted, supportive, genteel wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

Survivors include her sister Kay (Art) Rutledge; sons, Mitchel (Gale) Carter, Stan (Beth) Carter; grandchildren Heather (Shad) Lankford, Cory Carter, Timothee (Gilbert) Gonzalez; great-grandchildren Gage, Drew, Chantel and Cole Lankford, Taylor and Jackson Carter, Gilbert and Marco Gonzalez. In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth is welcomed to heaven by sisters Wautheda Wilson and Maxine Lee; brothers Norman Jackson and Oran Jackson; and grandson Christopher Carter.

Visitation will be at Parker Mortuary, 1502 South Joplin Avenue on Monday, November 18, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 19, at Byers Avenue United Methodist Church, 1730 Byers Aveue.
