Riot breaks out at the Ottawa County Jail

Rioters set a fire in a dormitory pod

MIAMI, Ok. – The Ottawa County Sheriff says rioters started a fire at the county jail.

According to Sheriff Jeremy Floyd it started around 7:30 p.m. when four inmates started a fire by short circuiting a TV receptacle in their dormitory pod. Police say the rioters also blocked the door.

Officers were able to force their way in and evacuate all the inmates to the recreation room. The fire department arrived around 9:00 p.m. and quickly extinguished the fire.

Three inmates were taken to the emergency room as a precautionary measure, but there were no serious injuries. No word yet on what caused the riot.

The Ottawa County Jail currently holds 25 inmates.
