Richard Carl Napier

January 7, 1937 - September 27, 2021

Richard Carl Napier of Miami, Oklahoma passed away September 27, 2021, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, MO. Richard was born January 7, 1937 in Coweta, Oklahoma to Thomas Melvin and Opal Beatrice (Quinton) Napier.

Richard grew up in Barnsdall and was a natural mechanic at a very young age. He worked on cars, washers and dryers, lawn mowers and many other items, even making parts that were no longer available. His first job was a paper delivery boy at age 9 with routes in the morning and evening delivering both the Tulsa World and Tulsa Tribune. At age 14, he began working at Oklahoma Tire and Supply Store for Bob and Dorothy Cribbet in Barnsdall, Oklahoma. In 1967 he went to work for Cities Service Natural Gas Pipeline in Tallant, Oklahoma where he was later transferred to Miami, Ok in 1972. He would later be transferred to the Joplin station when they were purchased by Williams Natural Gas Pipeline from which he would retire in 1998. He was awarded numerous safety medals along with various other accolades over his 31 years with the company. He served on the Barnsdall volunteer fire department for 17 years. He held many roles including Assistant Fire Chief and was then named Chief in 1969 before resigning to make the move to Miami in 1972.

Richard married the love of his life, Mary Lou Hill on July 9, 1956, in the Methodist Church of Sapulpa, Oklahoma. They would raise 3 sons together over the years. He was a good Christian man as well as being a proud Cherokee citizen and instilled these values in his family. He was a loyal Husband, loving Father, and very caring Grandfather. He was happiest when all the family would gather, always carrying his camera to capture the moments. Every year for 27 years, Richard and Mary Lou would spend a week vacationing and laughing with his brother and sisters along with their spouses usually in Branson, MO where they carried a long-standing reservation at the Twelve Oaks Inn. After his retirement, they would travel all over the United States, usually bringing along any family that could join.

Richard is preceded in death by two sons Stanley Ray and Lewis Craig. His parents Opal and Thomas Napier, sister lwannah Ross, twin sisters Ramona Tucker and Lavonna Shreffler, (baby) sister Willella Napier. His brothers Archie and Thomas Melvin Napier Jr. and brother in-laws Joe Tucker and Howard Ross.

He is Survived by his wife of 65 years Mary Lou Napier, sons Karl and Keith, brother in-laws Herbert Shreffler, Otha Hill, sister in-laws Reba (Hill) Goodell and Joanna (Edinger) Hill along with 7 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2021 at Ethel Reece Memorial Cemetery in Barnsdall, OK. Rev. Ron Forrest will officiate. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home Chapel in Miami, Ok.
