Red Cross readies grade schoolers with Pillowcase Project – Academy 2014 classes on May 31 in Joplin

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE AMERICAN RED CROSS

Joplin, May 22, 2014 — The American Red Cross has a special pillowcase for some school kids. It’s meant to be an emergency supplies kit and will be available at the Academy 2014 on Saturday, May 31 in the Billingsly Student Center at Missouri Southern State University.

The “Pillowcase Project” is an educational program for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. There will be three classes: 9-10:50 a.m., 11 a.m.-12:50 p.m., and 2-3:50 p.m. The goal is to help the kids learn about natural disasters and emergencies. They will participate in a program on house fires and learn basic coping skills to understand and deal with emergencies. Red Cross and The Walt Disney Company are partnering in the effort with three essential goals: Learn, Practice and Share.

The project was created by a Red Cross chapter in Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Evacuated Loyola University students used their pillowcases to carry belongings when forced to evacuate. This inspired an art therapy program to aid kids coping with disasters to decorate pillowcases that are also personal emergency kits.

Also being offered at the Academy are two classes on responding to active shooters. The “Active Shooter in Community Seminar” and “Active Shooter in Schools Seminar” are built on scenarios and lessons learned to teach you when to run, when to hide, and when to fight. The Academy classes are centered on Preparedness and Resiliency for individuals and organizations on three tracks: organizational resilience, disaster response, and health and safety.

Of special note is the class on “Adult/Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED.” There is normally a cost for this training but during the Academy it will be offered free to individuals on a first come basis. The class will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day of the Academy.
