Quapaw man sentenced to life in prison for sexual abuse of a minor

QUAPAW, Okla. — A Quapaw man will serve life in prison for sexually abusing a minor and illegally possessing parts of protected eagles.

In May of 2021, Carl Ortner was convicted of abusing a minor on tribal land in 2016. Because the crime happened on tribal land it falls under federal jurisdiction.

In addition to the sexual abuse, Ortner was convicted of possessing feathers, talons and heads from seven bald eagles and seven golden eagles.

A U.S. District Judge sentenced Ortner to life in prison and ordered him to pay a $100,000 fine.
