RELEASE FROM PITTSBURG STATE ATHLETICS:

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University men’s and women’s cross country teams will open the 2018 season Saturday (Sept. 15) at the 29th Annual Missouri Southern State University Stampede.

The women’s five-kilometer race will begin at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) with the men’s eight-kilometer competition to follow at 9:45 a.m.

The Pitt State women are the preseason favorite to claim the MIAA Championship in 2018 after the Gorillas captured the league crown in 2017.

Junior Piper Misse captured the individual 2017 MIAA Championship to lead the Pitt State women. Seniors Ashton Henson (sixth) and Katren Rienbolt (ninth) also garnered All-MIAA honors, while junior Cassidy Westhoff (11th) and senior Jordan Puvogel (13th) garnered honorable mention All-MIAA recognition last year.

The Pitt State men were picked in a tie for fifth place in the MIAA preseason poll.

Sophomore Diego Contreras (17th) and junior Matthew Wilson (19th) each earned honorable mention All-MIAA honors to lead the Pitt State men a year ago.
