Attempted murder suspect not home after police surround area
INDEPENDENCE, Kan. – Police surround a home in Independence, Kansas, but learn an attempted murder suspect was not inside.
Authorities now are asking for the public’s help in finding suspect Brian Medsker. Police Chief Jerry Harrison says Medsker could have fled overnight. The Independence Police Department asks that if you know where Medsker is call 911 or 620-332-1700 to notify the police.
The Chronicle reports that around 10:00 pm last night, officers learned Medsker was inside a home in that block armed with a weapon. They got a search warrant and called the Kansas Highway Patrol Special Response Team.
Law enforcement officers were seen in tactical gear this morning and in armored vehicles. They thought Medsker was inside the home, but shortly after 11:00 am, police learned he was not. That’s according to the Montgomery County Chronicle.
Hit and Run / Alleged Attempted Murder
The Independence Police Department states that charges against the suspect stem from an incident on Laurel near 12th Street last week. Shortly after noon on Thursday, officers responded to an injury accident with a car vs. cyclist.
They found a 39-year-old man with serious injuries.
According to the IPD, witnesses reported the suspect vehicle left the scene. They identified the driver and reported a small child was with him. The witnesses allegedly reported the suspect intentionally hit the cyclist.
“Officers documented evidence at the scene that indicated it was an intentional act and not a vehicle accident,” states the Independence Police Department.
Authorities say a different driver returned to the scene with the suspect vehicle.
EMS took the victim to a hospital for treatment.
Police believe Medsker knows the victim. They alleged this was a targeted attack of opportunity, not a random act. They started searching for him for attempted murder, aggravated battery and aggravated endangerment of a child.
The Police Department has not released any information about the victim.
