Police chase ends with crash into gas main

A driver chased by Joplin police DWI patrol officers is hospitalized after crashing into a gas main.

Police said a pursuit started in the East town area where an officer tried to stop a driver. That driver put the vehicle in reverse moving at officers then driving off through yards. The vehicle traveled across 4th and Michigan where the driver lost control and crashed into a gas main near 5th and Michigan streets. The suspect driver was trapped and was pulled to safety by officers as flames shot into the air from gas spewing from the main.

Police set up a perimeter to keep people away from the spewing gas. Eventually fire crews were on scene putting out the fire.

The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He was found out of Louisiana, a violation of his probation, and charges are pending.
