Pittsburg takes 3rd at SEK wrestling duals
The Dragons go 3-1 Saturday at the SEK league duals in Chanute.
CHANUTE, Kan. – The Pittsburg Purple Dragons finished 3rd at the SEK wrestling duals on Saturday afternoon in Chanute.
“I’m very happy with how we finished,” says Pittsburg head coach LC Davis, “I would have liked to have had a shot at 2nd or a shot at Independence, but that wasn’t in the cards for us. I’m pleased with what we did. We’re moving in the right direction.”
Pittsburg was 3-1 overall on the day.
The Purple Dragons beat Parsons 84-0 in the first round before falling to Chanute 70-6 in the semifinals. Pittsburg bounced back to beat Labette County 54-23 and Fort Scott 51-26 in the 3rd place dual.
“We beat a good Fort Scott team, and Labette County has a good team as well,” Davis says, “I think our guys are gaining confidence right now. We’ve missed out on a lot of events with COVID and being quarantined. This week we got to face the #5 team in 4A and the #2 team in 4A, and we beat a Fort Scott team that has ranked guys in 4A. We’re competing with these guys and it’s building our confidence.”

Barber, who joined the team in December and is in his first season of high school wrestling, finished 2-2 on the afternoon.
“I’m so impressed with CB,” Davis says of the junior, “It would be so easy for him to be frustrated, being such a dominant football player and coming to wrestling and taking a few tough losses, but he’s taking it all in stride. He’s just not as experienced as some of the guys he is wrestling yet. He’s being a team player. He’s doing whatever we ask. He’s not worrying about wins and losses, he’s worried about being a better athlete. We’re glad to have him on our team. I wish we would have had him with us starting his freshman year.”
