Pitt State sweeps pair of games Friday

The Pittsburg State University baseball team swept a pair of non-conference games at Al Ortolani Field Friday (Feb. 21), defeating Upper Iowa University, 15-4, and Truman State University, 12-1.
The Gorillas (6-6) claimed run-rule wins in both contests, pounding out 24 hits in the split doubleheader.
Dawson Pomeroy went 2-for-3 with a triple, a home runs, two runs scored and four RBIs in the victory against Upper Iowa. He also went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run later in the day against Truman.
Tyler Pittman, Tyson Cushman and Chaz Burgess also had two hits each against the Peacocks in game one. Mason Hartman, Ryan Koval, Blain Ohlmeier and Austin Bonnel all had two hits against the Bulldogs in the game two. Koval had a pair of doubles and Bonnel drove in three runs in the contest.
Justin Root (1-0) worked six innings of relief to earn the win against UIU. He scattered three hits and two walks while fanning seven batters. David Henderson (2-1) allowed just two hits in six innings of work against Truman. He walked one and registered eight strikeouts.
Pitt State will battle both Truman and Upper Iowa again Saturday (Feb. 22). The Gorillas and Bulldogs will meet at 1 p.m. and Pitt State and Upper Iowa will take the field at 4 p.m. TSU and UIU will open the day with a 10 a.m. contest.
