Release from Pittsburg State Athletics:

PITTSBURG — Pittsburg State University head football coach Brian Wright announced the recent hiring of Daniel McKinney as the Gorillas wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator.

McKinney comes to Pitt State after serving the past two seasons as passing game coordinator and recruiting coordinator at MIAA rival Missouri Southern State University.

McKinney helped the Lions compile 3,790 passing yards (344.5 ypg) and 22 touchdowns during the 2019 season as MSSU broke 17 offensive school records that year.

Prior to MSSU, McKinney served as wide receivers coach and co-pass game coordinator at Southwest Minnesota State University in 2018. SMSU finished the season ranked No. 2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in pass offense and wide receiver Daniel Davis compiled 79 receptions for 1,113 yards and nine touchdowns.

McKinney also spent three seasons as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach at Garden City Community College (2015-17). He recruited and coached several NJCAA All-America players, including Mike Hughes (1st round draft pick, Minnesota Vikings) and Jayru Campbell (2018 Harlon Hill Trophy winner) while helping the Broncbusters capture the NJCAA National Championship in 2016.

As a collegian, McKinney spent two seasons at City College of San Francisco, earning All-America honors and helping the squad to the 2011 NJCAA National Championship. He also twice earned All-Conference honors at Florida Atlantic University (2012-13). Following his collegiate career, McKinney signed as an undrafted free agent with the Washington Redskins in 2014.

McKinney earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies from FAU in 2014 and he is completing a master’s degree in physical education from SMSU.

“I am thrilled to add Dan McKinney to our staff as wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator,” Wright said. “Dan played wide receiver for me while at Florida Atlantic University and has a great understanding of our offensive scheme. Dan is energetic, extremely hard working and brings a valuable understanding of our recruiting landscape here to Pitt State.”
