Dear Four-State Football Fans,
Welcome to our first, fully digital KOAM PIGSKIN PREVIEW! This is the 26th year of our publication, and although it looks a little different than years past, we’re still bringing you the same content and I hope you enjoy it all the same.
Our PIGSKIN PREVIEW efforts this year are dedicated to our friend and colleague Matt Newbery. Matt passed away in the fall of 2020 due to complications from COVID-19. He was one of the biggest contributors we had on this project, and we leaned on each other a lot every year in the process of putting the magazine together. He’s the only one that I know for sure cared about this as much as I do. He was an encyclopedia of local sports knowledge, and he was a friend. I miss Matt, and our entire KOAM family will always miss him. His contributions to our station, and specifically this project, cannot be overstated.
Thank You To..
I want to thank the talented people that help us get this thing put together, including our sales staff and production crew. With the changes this year, everyone has kind of been asked to do different things, but they’ve rolled with the punches and I’m proud of how it has turned out.
I have to thank the coaches for filling out their forms and getting them back to us as quickly as possible. I know some of you probably groan when you see my name pop up in your inbox or pop up on your cell phone, but I really do appreciate the effort that some of you put into providing us with great information. I want this thing to be the best it can be, and I can’t do it without your help.
Big thanks to both Justin Maskus at Missouri Southern and Dan Wilkes at Pittsburg State, not only for the information provided for the PIGSKIN PREVIEW, but also for answering my calls and texts and all the help throughout the year. The list of drinks I probably owe them is endless.
We owe a big thanks to all the businesses that made financial investments in supporting four-state football by purchasing advertisements in this year’s PIGSKIN PREVIEW. It’s one of the things that makes this area so special. I love seeing the support local businesses give our teams, and I ask that you return the favor by patronizing these businesses and let them know you appreciate the support. We couldn’t do this without them.
I also want to thank our own sports reporter, Dani Terzer, for the help in writing these previews and for everything she does for our sports department every day. This is going to be her first football season here in the Four-State area. I’ve talked Friday nights up quite a bit since she got here, and I know you all won’t disappoint.
My last thank you goes to Stacie Strader, our digital content producer. She has a lot on her plate every day, and the changes to our PIGSKIN PREVIEW this year only added to it. We worked together on coming up with most of the new format and layout, and she made it a reality. She nailed it, as always. We’re lucky to have her as part of this project and lucky to have her at KOAM.
This is my 7th year as Sports Director at KOAM. I’m still here because this place is special, and it means a lot to me to do a good job for the players, coaches, schools and fans in our area. I hope my passion for the area and love for what we do show up in our work.
If you see us on the sidelines this fall, please come up and say hi. We’re always down to talk sports. We’ll be bringing you the best local football coverage every Friday night with PRESS BOX on FOX 14 at 11 PM, and also on the latter half of the KOAM NEWS AT TEN. If you miss it live, you can always check out highlights and scores at koamnewsnow.com – and follow us on Twitter at @j_lenard, @dani_terzer and @koamfox14sports.
Good luck to all area teams this season. I’m hoping Friday nights and Saturday afternoons can start to feel normal again. We’ll see you out there.
Sports Director, KOAM/FOX14
