“We have high expectations for Mt. Vernon football. Out guys are expected to prepare and perform at an elite level. We don’t always achieve those goals, but the expectations are and will continue to be there.”

Five Year Trend (Playoffs)

  • 2020: 5-6 (Third Round)
  • 2019: 10-1 (Second Round)
  • 2018: 12-2 (Semifinals)
  • 2017: 10-5 (State Runner-Up)
  • 2016: 7-5 (Third Round)

Despite finishing the 2020 season with one of the program’s poorest records in recent years, the Mountaineers battled all the way to the district championship game. “To start off the 2020 campaign by winning four in a row, only to lose the next five in a row and still play for a District Championship was a tremendous accomplishment,” Cox says. “It didn’t matter who we had on the field last year, young or old, our guys fought hard and competed to the final whistle. It was not the season we had worked for, but I was proud of the effort and grit we displayed.”

Personnel-wise, Mt. Vernon will look very different in the fall. Although COVID posed many challenges last season, it also allowed younger athletes to get quality reps at the varsity level. Cox believes this will “pay dividends” in the upcoming season. “Our summer activities will be very important to the maturation of our sophomore and juniors,” Cox adds. “It’s exciting to see how this group comes together as a team and a family.” The senior class is small, but the Mountaineers will look to Dominic Dawson and Isaac Burks to lead the team on the field on Friday nights.
