Three Rivers League

School Colors: Orange and Black

Head Coach: Max Mickunas (0-0, 1st season)

Assistant coaches: Gavin Cole (OC), Derek Scharff

“I took this head coaching job because I knew there was a lot of untapped potential at the school. It’s my first head coaching job so just the opportunity for myself and my players to all grow together and work in creating a winning culture was a great opportunity for me to take the next step. The competitiveness and passion that I exhibit rubs off on the players. I also bring a fast paced and fun offensive scheme that was one of the best in the state at Lebo last year.”

Marmaton Valley is coming off a 1-7 season. The Wildcats didn’t compete in their full schedule of games, forfeiting the final three. The lone win, came in the season opener, a 62-52 road victory against Altoona-Midway. Despite the shortened season, there was still an opportunity for the Wildcats to learn and grow. “We learned what it takes to compete with good teams at the varsity level,” Mickunas says. “We learned that physicality, speed, and relentlessness on every play is needed to be successful.”

Max Mickunas enters his first year as the Wildcats head coach with a plan to take the program in a different direction. “Working hard all summer, competing, being physical, and being great teammates can take this program to new heights,” Mickunas says. “It’s a gradual process, but I have a great group of seniors to get the ball rolling.” The Wildcats senior class includes their best player from 2020, running back and defensive back, Quincy Adams. Garrett Henderson will be leading the team at quarterback, after having missed the 2020 season due to COVID. As for the underclassmen, they were able to gain valuable experience last year which will serve them well this upcoming season. “This group is hungry, and they want to have more success than they did last year,” Mickunas says. “We have more team speed this year, better numbers, and a good blend of upper and underclassmen who will contribute right away.” Mickunas emphasizes quality practices as a key to success with a focus on physicality, tackling and blocking.
