Class 2A District 2

Tri-Valley League

School Colors: Orange and Black

Head Coach: Logan Wyrick (40-20, 7th season)

Assistant coaches: Dave Taylor, Jason Weilert and Jeremy Weilert

“We were a very young team last season, and many younger athletes got a lot of opportunities to play at the varsity level. We found out a lot about different areas that we had questions about going into the season, and even though some of those questions weren’t answered, we believe we have a good foundation to continue to build on going into 2021. We have better depth going into next season. We had 20 different players start games at different times and 20 different players start at different times as well. We’ll also look for a quality class of freshmen that had a lot of success in middle school to join this group.”

Five Year Trend (Playoffs)

  • 2020: 4-4 (No Playoffs)
  • 2019: 10-1 (State Quarterfinals)
  • 2018: 11-1 (State Semifinals)
  • 2017: 7-3 (First Round)
  • 2016: 4-6 (First Round)

The hot streak Humboldt was on couldn’t last forever. The Cubs lost too many experienced and talented players from 2019 and had to re-load. “Our biggest challenge of last season was only having three seniors and our lack of returning varsity playing time,” says coach Wyrick, “There were a lot of growing pains during the 2020 season.” Even with a young roster dealing with the uncertain times of COVID, Humboldt was still able to go 4-4 and avoid slipping under .500 for the first time since 2016. It’s a good football program.

Humboldt has a strong group returning. They’re also excited to get Gavin Page back from injury in 2021. Page was an All-State DB in 2019 and the team’s starting quarterback. He missed the remainder of the season after getting injured early in the Cubs’ week three game in 2020. “He is definitely our primary leader on and off the field,” coach Wyrick says, “It will make a major difference having him return to the field for his senior season.” Having Page back may also fix some of the team’s offensive issues from last season. “I believe we need to find a way to be more balanced,” Wyrick says of his offense, “not just with our run game and pass game, but with distribution of the football. We believe we had some real tendencies of running the football with whoever happened to be under center for us last season, and I hope to see some others step up and make plays for us on offense.” As for the other side of the ball, Wyrick is starting with the most basic part of the game. “We have to make major strides in tackling,” he says of his defense, “I felt like our tackling last year was the poorest it’s been in my time here. I take that personally and it’s something that will definitely be fixed going into 2021.” Humboldt has a good program, a good coach and a good group of guys back. They’ll be better than they were in 2020. “We’ve had some productive seasons over the last few years, and we hope to get back on track,” Wyrick finishes, “It will take hard work and dedication leading up to and during the season for us to reach our goals.”
