Parsons makes big strides in year two under Schibi

Parsons is 7-2 this season and won their first playoff game since 2018.

PARSONS, Ks. – The Parsons Vikings have found success in year two under head coach Jeff Schibi.

“A lot of people I guarantee you did not expect us to be in the position we are now,” Schibi says.

Last year, in Schibi’s first year, Parsons finished 3-6.

“I think that’s added a little bit of fuel to the fire,” Schibi says. “We use that as motivation to ignite us every day at practice and every Friday night.”

This year, the Vikings have more than double the number of wins. They are 7-2 and have won their last five games in a row.

“A turning point in our season was early in the summer when we went to a Pittsburg State team camp,” Schibi says. “We built a lot of team chemistry and team comradery there. We got a lot of reps at that team camp, and I thought that’s where we really came together as a team. It ignited us and propelled us through the rest of the summer and into the beginning of this year.”

“We were able to click, and a lot of people were buying into what was going on and wanting to win,” says Parsons DE Isiah Tyson.

The team also worked hard in the weight room over the summer and it’s paid off. The Vikings won their first playoff game since 2018 last week.

“Our defense has carried us through most of the season,” Schibi says. “Being more physical and tackling better has really took us to that next level.”

Everyone on the team is stepping up.

“We’re going to start five sophomores on offense on Friday night at Girard,” Schibi says. “That group has really stepped up and played a huge part in our success. Those sophomores are making big plays on Friday nights and if they can continue to do that, they’re going to be a special group here.”

It’s been quite the turnaround, but the Vikings aren’t done yet.

“We trying to do what the class of 2018 couldn’t which is get to the championships,” says Parsons RT/DT Hunter Brownewell.

The Vikings have a huge game coming up in the regional round of the state tournament. Parsons is on the road against undefeated Girard on Friday.
