Ottawa County man accused of assault during Capitol breach
MIAMI, Okla. (News on 6) – The U.S. Attorney’s Office accuses a northeast Oklahoma man of assaulting a photographer in the breach of the U.S. Capitol on January 6.
Two videos allegedly captured 41-year-old Benjamen Burlew, of Miami, assaulting a photographer. According to documents, Burlew aggressively confronted the photographer who was trying to get out of the way, then pushed and shoved him down.
Documents state that Burlew came back to the photographer later, lunged at him, and threw him over a wall onto the lawn of the capitol building.
The U.S. Attorney’s office said Burlew is the eighth person to be accused of assaulting the press, either by destroying media equipment or attacking journalists.
Officials said Burlew was arrested on Aug. 19 and made his first court appearance on Aug. 20.
