A homicide investigation is underway in Ottawa county, Oklahoma — after a body is found in Cardin.
Around 5 pm on Wednesday, authorities in Ottawa county received a call for a body at 3rd and Main in Cardin.
Jeremy Floyd, Ottawa County Sheriff:”When officers arrived along with the Quapaw marshals, the tribal marshals, they found a male that was in the creek area in the low water bridge area that was there at 3rd and Main.”
Cardin — a small town south of Picher — is completely abandoned and is considered feed land for the Quapaw tribe.
Floyd:”Since I’ve been in office, we haven’t worked anything out there as far as what we’re working right now, so how the individual was located is some beaver trappers that were in the area came across him and that’s who notified us.”
For many circumstances — that Floyd wasn’t able to elaborate on — they began treating it as a homicide, and called the OSBI to help with the investigation.
Floyd says they suspect the body was dumped at the low water bridge at 3rd and main about 24 hours before being found — and was a man in his 20’s — but they don’t have much else to go on.
Floyd:”No identification marks, tattoos or anything that we can find that we can attempt to identify, so we’re doing the best that we can to make sure we find some closure for the family.”
The sheriff’s office has sent the body to the Oklahoma medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.
The body hasn’t been identified yet at this time (5:30 pm on 12/13).
We’ll continue to provide updates to this story as they become available.
