Ottawa County Board of Commissioners approve ‘Second Amendment Sanctuary County’ proposal
Sheriff Floyd says it's important to protect his communities rights
OTTAWA COUNTY, Okla. – Ottawa County Sheriff, Jeremy Floyd, declared the county as a ‘Second Amendment Sanctuary’ on February 18th of this year. On March 3rd it was approved by the Board of Commissioners.
“A 2A sanctuary county basically means we will not inherit, adopt or accept any red flags law that is going to infringe or basically try to take the second amendment away from the people that are entitled to, I guess you could say” said Sheriff Floyd.
The Second Amendment is the right to keep and bear arms.
“Some of the red flag laws that we hear about or the rumor or what some of the states are trying to inherit or adopt is you know taking those guns away period or banning away a particular gun” added Sheriff Floyd.
He says it’s important for him to protect the rights of his community members.
“This is an insurance policy that we put in place to make sure that everyone is entitled to their constitutional right.”
Charles Rhoades of Rhoades Gun Shop in Commerce is a strong believer in the Second Amendment, but doesn’t think making the community a 2A sanctuary will make much of a difference.
“A 2A sanctuary in Ottawa county is good, but I don’t know if it will make that much difference because there’s not so many anti-gun people around here in Oklahoma and this part of the country.”
But he is hoping the comfort that being a sanctuary county will bring to gun owners will increase business.
“A far as a big difference probably not, I don’t think so anyways, but I hope it does that’s okay with me.”
The approval goes into effect immediately, according to Sheriff Floyd.
“As a whole it makes people a little more comfortable, relaxed per say and it basically, it puts us all on the same team and in the time of need if we should ever need that, those resources will be available.”
Sheriff Floyd was the 19th Sheriff in Oklahoma to declare his county a Second Amendment Sanctuary County.
