One Joplin Police officer has now died of injuries in exchange of gunfire


JOPLIN, Mo. – Tuesday afternoon three Joplin Police officers were injured in exchange of gunfire at two separate locations with a suspect who is now deceased.

Joplin Police Asst. Chief Brian Lewis told us officers responded to the area of 4th and Rangeline in regard to a disturbance just before 1:30 p.m.. Once on scene officers contacted a subject who they identified as being involved in the disturbance.

As officers attempted to take the subject into custody, he shot two officers and fled the scene in a stolen patrol car,” Asst. Chief Lewis tells us.

Tuesday evening more information is revealed by Asst. Chief Lewis that one officer has now died.

Officers attempted to stop the fleeing suspect, who wrecked the patrol car and fled on foot to the area of 9 th and Connecticut. Officers once again located the suspect, and he fired shots at officers, injuring one. An officer returned fire and struck the suspect.

Three officers were transported with serious injuries.

One officer succumbed to his injuries this afternoon.  Another officer is in critical condition, and another officer is in serious but stable condition.” – JOPLIN POLICE DEPT

There is no further threat to the public as the suspect was fatally wounded in the second exchange of gunfire.

All names are being withheld at this time.  We anticipate more information to be released Wednesday in a formal press conference.
