ONE-HITTER: Frontenac’s Johnson shuts down Chanute in 8-0 victory

Avery Johnson throws a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts Thursday.

FRONTENAC, Kan. – (WATCH) Frontenac freshman Avery Johnson throws a one-hitter against Chanute Thursday night, leading the Raiders (10-1) to an 8-nothing win over the Blue Comets (10-3).

“She was lights out,” says Frontenac head coach Cassie Rhuems, “She had control of her curve and her screwball tonight. She’s starting to understand the philosophy behind being a pitcher and pitching to the half of the plate we’re trying to hit. She was in control of the game from the first inning.”

Johnson ended the night with 15 strikeouts.

“You look at her first outing of the season compared to now, you can see her confidence growing,” Rhuems adds of her freshman pitcher, “In the past I think she’s been able to just overpower people. She’s understanding and learning more of the game from the circle, and you can see her gaining that confidence.”
