Numbers Up For Riverton Football
The Riverton Rams have struggled on the football field lately. The Rams finished last season with a 1-8 overall record, and the team has won just five total games the last three years.
However, there are plenty of reasons for optimism for Riverton in 2018.
The Rams have six starters back on each side of the ball this season. Also, with the move from class 3A to class 2A, Riverton will no longer have to face some of the bigger schools in the CNC. They still have Galena on the schedule, but will not have to face Frontenac, Columbus or Colgan in 2018.
On top of that, numbers are up for the Riverton High School football program. Head coach Johnny Mallatt tells us that he has 35 guys out for football this season, after having just 16 in 2016 and 24 last season.
“The kids are getting interested,” Mallat adds, “We didn’t win very many games, one game last year, but let me tell you they’re here. They’re ready to play. We got some good junior linemen. They started as freshmen. That’s a 14-year-old boy against an 18-year-old man. They took their lumps, but they’re going to be pretty good linemen for us.”
“We’ve grown a lot as a group,” says junior lineman Trevor Parsons, “We expect to win this year.”
It’s a new year. We have new people,” adds senior receiver/defensive back Tyler Larison, “It’s just makes you feel better about the year. Getting more kids to come out…shows that more people care about Riverton football.”
