TOPEKA, Kan. - The Missouri Southern Lions entered today with only one loss away from being eliminated in the MIAA tournament, but the Lions responded.
Missouri Southern started the day against Missouri Western. The Lions cored all of their runs in the 1st inning. An RBI single by Ashlynn Williams gave the Lions a 1-0 lead. The next batter Kara Amos launched a home run out to left field to give Missouri Southern a 3-0 lead.
Missouri Southern's pitching staff did the rest as Avery Tallman pitched 4 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Bailey Lacy did the rest by pitching the final three innings scoreless and picked up the save as the Lions won 3-0 over the Griffons.
Missouri Southern sticks around awaiting to play the loser of the Central Oklahoma and Rogers State game. The Lions lost to Rogers State on Friday night, which sent them to the losers bracket. Missouri Southern does get another shot at taking on Rogers State. The Lions made the most of their opportunity and defeated the Hillcats 4-3.
The Lions scored first in the 3rd inning after Ashlynn Williams reached on a throwing error to give Southern a 1-0 lead. In the 4th inning Emily Perry hit an inside-the-park home run to give Missouri Southern a 2-0 lead. Missouri Southern goes up 4-0 entering the 5th inning. The pitching staff once again held strong as Avery Tallman pitched another gem going 4.1 innings pitched and giving up only one earned run. The freshman Natalie Bates shut the door picking up the save that sends Missouri Southern to the MIAA tournament Championship Series against Central Oklahoma.Â
Lions once again will get another crack at it after losing to Central Oklahoma last Sunday. The Bronchos swept the Lions in the final regular season match up to secure the MIAA regular season championship.
Missouri Southern will have to defeat Central Oklahoma twice in order to win the MIAA tournament. Game begins Sunday at 11 am.
