Suspect wanted in fatal crash that killed 4, including MSSU student

A truck driver charged in a fatal crash that killed four people, including a Missouri Southern student, is now a fugitive. 

The last entry in court documents, dated June 30th. state Mohamad Y. Jama as a fugitive after he failed to appear in court. It also states that his counsel has also withdrawn from the case.

Jama was charged with Reckless Homicide/Construction Zone.

The crash happened on November 21st, 2017 outside of Saint Louis, Illinois.

Madison County, IL State Attorney Tom Gibbons says 54-year-old Mohamad Y. Jama was driving too fast in a construction zone on Interstate 55 near the community of Hamel when his tractor-trailer slammed into other vehicles that had slowed or stopped.

The crash killed 19-year-old Vivan Vu (Joplin, MO), 20-year-old Tori Carroll (Alhambra, IL), 20-year-old Hailey Bertels and her 17-year-old sister, Madisen Bertels (Staunton, IL).

Gibbons says Jama (Greeley, CO) was charged April 16th, 2018, after the completion of an Illinois State Police investigation.

Vivan Vu graduated Magna Cum Laude from Joplin High School in 2016.  She was a sophomore at Missouri Southern State University, studying international studies. Campus officials say she joined the university as a member of the honors program. Vu, five other students and a professor were returning from a "Model United Nations Conference" in Chicago when the crash happened.
